Title: TEXTURE, FORM, FLOW and everything in between
I began this series with only one thought in mind: to polish up my hand-building skills. I had no specific vision for the end product, only the hunger for a challenge. I went in solely with the intention of creating larger and more complex shapes, and using these new forms as a blank canvas for applying new textures to emphasise their distinct features. I wanted to see just how far I could go.
By the 3rd form, I had completely surrendered myself to the process of creation. The more shapes I made, the more eager I became to try out every possible shape and combination of form, colour and texture. I realised that my feelings, imagination, and most importantly, my free spirit, were the sole drivers of the process. For me, these clay lumps are not inanimate objects, but sort of like my imaginary friends. With every piece, I begin with a similar foundation. The further I work, the more I feel these little friends calling out to me about how they want to ‘be’ in this world. This is how I begin to envision exactly where to shape new openings, and complete the flow and textures of the vessel. They give me their names before the vessel has even been fired, and I know exactly what colours and treatments they need to finally be complete.
This project symbolises my journey as a whole, as it can never really be complete. Growth is endless and the real goal is to take notice and love it all, every step of the way. As an artist, I will spend the rest of my lìfe building up and adding to my kingdom of imaginary friends.
Artist Profile:
Ami (born.1991) lived in Australia for over 14 years, and received a Bachelor of Product Design. It was through her constant exploration in the Arts that she uncovered a profound connection with ceramics. Something about how she could directly manipulate the medium of clay with her bare hands gave her a sense of purpose and control. She attended all the classes that she could afford, obsessed with improving her skills.
When she finally returned home to Ho Chi Minh in 2021, Ami was ready to unleash her dreams. She was able to completely break down the fundamentals of clay and hone in on her personal style every single day. She is currently exploring contemporary and modern ceramics inspired by her natural surroundings.
Ami’s personal ceramics style revolves around her own free spirit. Her imagination runs most wild when she is daydreaming about how she can translate her personal loves, things she can see and touch, the people she connects with, and her driving emotion, into beautiful works of clay artistry.
